State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai
2020/02/19

On 19 February, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi noted that China and Thailand are one family. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the royal family, government and people from various sectors of Thailand have lent a helping hand, demonstrating the special kinship between the two peoples. In particular, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, through a specially-made video, expressed his support to Wuhan and to China. China appreciates Thailand's decision to respect the recommendations of WHO and take proportionate and rational responses to the epidemic. As a Chinese proverb goes, "Adversity reveals true friendship." We believe that after the epidemic, exchanges between the two peoples will grow even closer and the traditional friendship will be further enhanced.

Wang Yi also briefed on the progress China has made in fighting the outbreak. He pointed out that China and ASEAN countries are close neighbors with a shared future. Whether in the face of the Asian financial crisis, the SARS outbreak or the Indian Ocean tsunami, the two sides have worked together and overcome the difficulties through mutual support. At such a critical moment in China's fight against the epidemic, both China and Thailand support the convening of the Special China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). It once again testifies to the resolve of the two countries to stand together to tide over the difficulties. He believed that the Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting tomorrow will be a success and a contribution to public health in the region.

Foreign Minister Don pointed out that first of all he wanted to say "Stay strong Wuhan". Thailand and China have consistently rendered each other understanding and support. At this critical moment in the fight against the epidemic, it is timely for us to have this Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting and discuss ways to jointly respond to the epidemic. The meeting is of great significance as the first multilateral foreign ministers' meeting that focuses on public health. He also noted that it is highly comforting to see the positive results being achieved in China's outbreak response, adding that the infected patients in Thailand are also making good recoveries. He expressed his confidence that with the epidemic posing a common challenge for countries in the region, the meeting tomorrow will produce positive outcomes, enhance the solidarity and enrich the cooperation between ASEAN and China, and contribute to public health in the region and beyond.
